Fairbanks Youth Court graduates new class of attorneys
Dec 7, 2008
Public speaking is the biggest fear of many Americans, but not for volunteers with the Fairbanks North Star Youth Court.
The court provides Fairbanks youths ages 12-15 a chance to practice public speaking, logic and rhetoric while making a difference in the community, one trial at a time.
The North Star Youth Court swore in a new class of young attorneys on Saturday after the students completed their training with a mock trial and modified bar exam. Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, young and old, with diverse talents and abilities, as was evident at the 10th Annual Flint Hills Resources Golden Heart Awards on Wednesday evening. A decade of honoring these local, unsung heroes — the everyday people who work quietly throughout the community providing helpful services and human kindness — has never been a chore for Jeri Wigdahl of Flint Hills, who organizes the evening each year. more... While some students are spending their spring breaks in warm and exotic destinations, aspiring lawyers in the Fairbanks North Star Youth Court program are learning about the legal system. After 16 hours of course work, the Youth Court participants have to pass a Youth Court bar exam. Then can be sworn in as lawyers with the ability to work on actual cases that pass through Youth Court. On Thursday, the eve of their exam, course teacher and retired lawyer John Hagey has his 14 students work on and present opening and closing arguments for the prosecution and defense on a fictional case involving assault, misconduct and possession.
